How do I calculate the effective rate for credit card processing?

Divide one month of total processing fees by that month's card sales and multiply by 100. The Card Fee Field Guide calculator by Avendo does that for you, then estimates what a competing quote would cost on the same sales, so you can compare like with like.

Assumptions behind the estimate

  • Effective rate = total fees divided by total card sales, multiplied by 100.
  • Quote cost = card sales times the quoted percentage, plus transactions times the fixed fee, plus monthly fees.
  • The quote's percentage is assumed to apply to every sale. Real interchange-plus costs vary by card, so treat interchange-plus quotes as a rough guide only.
  • Chargebacks, refunds and one-off fees are not included.
  • The result is an estimate, not a financial decision, an offer or a guarantee of savings.

For a steadier picture, Clearly Payments suggests working from your last 90 days of statements. You can run this calculator once per month and compare. For context on what the numbers mean, see what counts as a good rate.

Common questions

Short answers here. Every question is also on the full FAQ page.

What is an effective rate in credit card processing?

Your effective rate is the total you paid in processing fees divided by your total card sales, shown as a percentage. It folds every fee into one number so you can compare months or providers fairly. For example, $300 in fees on $10,000 of card sales is a 3% effective rate.

What is a good CC processing rate?

A good credit card processing rate is one that puts your effective rate at the low end of the typical 1.5% to 3.5% range for your kind of sales. Compare quotes on your real sales mix, not headline rates. For interchange-plus pricing, NerdWallet cites 0.4% plus 8 cents as an example markup.

What should I look for on a processing statement?

Look for total card volume, total fees, and fees broken into interchange, assessments and processor markup. Clearly Payments suggests computing these for the last 90 days. Monthly, gateway and chargeback fees should also appear as separate lines you can add up and question.
